Oil Part 16

Proverbs 27:9 Amplified Version

Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend’s counsel that comes from the heart.

How can oil and perfume bring delight to the heart? Oil feels great when massaged into the skin and perfume is pleasant to the sense of smell. These two together can produce a wonderful feeling.

Spiritual parallel: When we experience the oil of the Spirit and the fragrance of His presence, we have a great experience that we will look for again and again.

Oil Part 15

Proverbs 21:20 NKJV

There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it.

Solomon said that unlike a foolish man, a wise man has treasure and oil in his house. The difference is the wise man values what he has and treats his valuables properly. The foolish has no sense of the value of what comes into his possession so he wastes it and ends up doing without.

Spiritual parallel:  Wise people understand the value of the Holy Spirit and the anointing and do what it takes to maintain an abundant supply. The foolish person allows himself to be distracted and neglects doing the things to keep his dwelling full of spiritual oil. When we have used up oil in the storms of life, we must refill our vessels. Sometimes that requires extra effort.

Oil Part 14

Psalm 141:5 NKJV

Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

We may not think often about the oil of the Holy Spirit and the anointing in terms of rebuke and chastisement. However, one of the most vital roles of the Holy Spirit is to correct us when we are going wrong. It is a display of God's love for us.

Revelation 3:19 NKJV

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

The psalmist referred to chastisement and rebuke as an act of kindness and excellent oil. A wise person will never despise being corrected. If nobody can stop us from going into a ditch, our lives and work could be wasted gradually or suddenly. Thank God for the oil of correction.

Oil Part 13

Psalm 133:1-2 NKJV

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments.

The psalmist David compared brethren dwelling in unity to the anointing oil on the high priest. Why? True unity based on godly purposes creates an atmosphere for the glory, the anointing and the presence of the Holy Spirit. When God's people gather on one accord, with one mind and purpose, the Holy Spirit will show up.

Oil Part 12

Psalm 104:15 NKJV

And wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man's heart.

The psalmist praised God for wonderful things the Lord had done. He mentioned how God provided oil for humanity to make the face shine.

Spiritual parallel:  Just as natural oil will cause a natural shine to be visible on the skin, the oil of the Holy Spirit and the anointing will bring a spiritual shine - a glow upon us. In other words, we will stand out and be recognized as being associated with the Lord because of His goodness being manifested through us. Isaiah 60:1 NKJV says, "Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you."

Oil Part 11

Psalm 92:10 NKJV

But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.

The psalmist speaks about how he was anointed with fresh oil. The anointing is in us but it needs to be refreshed constantly. The apostle Paul told Timothy to stir up the gift inside of him (2 Timothy 1:6). It was in Timothy, but without a refreshing of it - a stirring, the gift would not remain active and productive. Paul told the Ephesian church to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). They were a spirit-filled church, but the apostle was encouraging them to keep it fresh. We need fresh oil - a fresh anointing, fresh fellowship with the Holy Spirit each day. How did Paul say they could do this?

Ephesians 5:19-20 NKJV

speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, [20] giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
