Numbers 20:8 NKJV

“Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals."

As they were traveling to the Promised Land, the Israelites came to a place where they were out of water and could not find any. They verbally attacked Moses and Aaron, blaming them for the dilemma. God told Moses to speak to a rock to get water for the people.

Spiritual parallel: When there is a drought spiritually, the wrong thing to do is look to human beings as the source of your problem or your solution. We need to go to the Rock. The rock in the wilderness was a type of Christ. He is the One who satisfies our thirst.

John 4:13-14 NKJV: Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

John 7:37-39 NKJV: On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy] Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Even when we go to the Word, it can be just ink on paper or words on a screen unless we get the help of the Holy Spirit to cause it to quench our thirsty hearts.  The water of the Spirit was made possible by Jesus Christ.

John 16:7, 12-15 NKJV: Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

John 14:26 NKJV: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
