US Supreme Court rules in favor of Coach fired for praying on football field after games
A high school coach has won his case. The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Coach Joe Kennedy. Kennedy was fired as an assistant coach from his job as a Washington State High School. The coach began praying on the 50-yard line after games. Coach Kennedy prayed alone and asked no one to participate. Students, coaches and opposing teams eventually joined Kennedy in the prayers. The school district later fired the coach claiming the prayer was a violation of the separation of church and state. The justices ruled on the case 6-3. The justices in the majority opinion wrote that the school district’s claim the prayer was a violation of the First Amendment’s Establishment clause (which requires a separation of church and state) was misguided. Justice Neil Gorsuch said in the dissent for the majority, "the best of our traditions" call for "mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike." The justices opposed to the ruling claim the decision misconstrues the facts of the case.
