SC Supreme court upholds abortion restrictions
South Carolina’s highest court has upheld a new state abortion law.  State representatives passed a new state law restricting abortions to six weeks of pregnancy. The now law would ban abortions after the first heartbeat is detected. The law was previously overturned by the same court but was reconsidered following the retirement of one of the justices presiding over the case. The law later ruled 4-1 in favor of the new abortion law. The majority opinion in the case ruled South Carolina’s state constitution did not include abortions in its protection of privacy for its residents. The state’s governor, Henry McMaster released a statement saying, “With this victory we protect the lives of countless unborn children and reaffirm South Carolina’s place as one of the most pro-life states in America.”

Maryland Parents fight for right to opt out of controversial curriculums
Parents in the state of Maryland are continuing their fight after a loss in court. A federal justice recently ruled against parents who sued the Montgomery County School system. The parents were seeking to have their children opt out reading and discussing pro-LGBT books and topics in school. The school district would require children as young as preschool aged students to participate in these lessons. Deborah L. Boardman ruled that parents objecting to this curriculum was not a fundamental right based on a violation of their religious beliefs. Parents say they will appeal the court’s decision. The group further added they will not quit in this fight. The case is expected to go all the way to the US Supreme Court.
