There is a spiritual side to things, and there is a practical side. Many times, we can focus on one side more than the other. This verse focuses on the practical side. To get to where God wants us to be it takes knowledge (learning), skill, and wise counsel. Jesus Himself when He was twelve years old was in the temple listening to teachers and asking them questions. When His parents asked him why He was there, He replied that He “must be about His Father’s business” (Luke 2:46-49).
Being about His Father’s business was the spiritual side, but He had to go about it from a practical side. He had to learn what the teachers of the law knew because He knew that was an important part of walking in what God had for Him to walk in. If Jesus had to increase in learning and skill and even counsel from His teachers, we must be willing to do the same. We must acquire knowledge, skill, and even allow ourselves to be mentored and learn from our teachers. The student is not greater than his master. If Jesus was willing to do it, we must be willing to do the same.
