Jonah 2:8 NKJV
Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own mercy.
Although the mercy of God is abundant and eternal, we can put ourselves out of its reach. Jonah said those who turn to false gods forsake the mercy that is theirs. It seems to me that this would apply to those who know better, or at least have been presented with the choice. So when we look to the true and living God and worship Him as our Source we put ourselves in the path of mercy. We must never turn away from God and look to something or someone else as the source of our help. Nothing should become a substitute for God.
