Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Jesus sheds light on how we can position ourselves under the "mercy spout." He said "Blessed" (Amplified versions says "happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous - with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation regardless of their outward conditions) are those who are merciful. Why? They will reap what they sow. As they give mercy, they will receive mercy. We know mercy is extended to everyone in some way. So obviously there is special mercy for the merciful. I want that extra mercy, so I will endeavor to be what Jesus classified as merciful.
