Genesis 28:20-21 NKJV

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God."

Jacob described what he expected God to do for him. He was responding to a dream he had in which the Lord promised to bless and protect him and also bless his descendants. Anticipating that God would bless him with protection and necessary provision, and bring him back to his father's house in peace, Jacob made a vow to serve the Lord forever. Jacob had a live encounter with God. We may or may not have such an encounter but we have something Jacob did not have - the Bible. We can have encounters with God through His Word and our fellowship with Him, and thereby understand that we should expect God to bless us with His peace while we are living on earth.
