1 Samuel 10:1 NKJV

[1] Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: "Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance?

Samuel anointed Saul’s head with oil to set him apart to be king of Israel. When Saul failed to honor God in his role as king and began to take matters into his own hand, Samuel poured oil on David whom God ordained to succeed Saul. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

Spiritual parallel: Assignments from God are given with an empowerment from God. We must acknowledge that we are equipped to fulfill the task given to us by God. He has given us the Holy Spirit to do whatever He told us to do. We must realize that our empowerment is connected to our relationship with God. We are not empowered to do our own thing. We are given authority to obey God’s commands and carry out His plan. As Samson found out, the anointing can be lifted and leave us in the very uncomfortable position of being on our own. (Judges 16:18-21)
