CMS removes sexually explicit books from two public school libraries following criticism
(Parent warning: some content in this story maybe too mature for young children/tween aged children)
Charlotte-Mecklenburg County’s interim superintendent has announced a review of over 8-thousand books following the removal of a controversial book. The book entitled ‘Let’s talk about it, A teens guide to sex, relationships and being human’ was found in two high school libraries in the county last month. In a statement CMS says the books were a part of a package sent by a publishing company and were deemed appropriate for students’ 9th -12th grade. The book features various topics and illustrations to accompany the book’s subject matter. Although deemed appropriate a parent Brooke Weiss, Chair of the Mecklenburg County Moms for Liberty says in protest she posted the book’s contents on social media. Weiss says within 15 minutes she was censored due to its graphic content according to the social media company that censored the book. CMS interim superintendent, Crystal Hill immediately pulled the book along with another book deemed inappropriate once she was made aware of the situation according to reports.
No students at the two high schools where the books were located had reportedly checked the books out before they were removed.

Christian school banned after refusing to play against trans student athlete
A Christian school in Vermont is now banned for refusing to play against a team. According to reports Mid Vermont Christian school’s girls’ basketball team will be banned from any playoff tournaments in the future due to forfeiting a tournament game. The schools withdrew from a tournament following the announcement that their opponent’s team had a student who was a biological male that identified as transgender. A representative from the school, Vicky Fogg released a statement saying in part, “competing against a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players.” Following the statement Mid Vermont Christian School was banned from all further tournament competitions. The Vermont Principals Association claims the forfeit was a violation of state law regarding transgender athletes. This Vermont state law has continued to be surrounded with controversy due to it biased nature towards biological female athletes. Last year a student and her father in Vermont were suspended from a school’s athletic program after the student refused to change in the same locker room with another student that claimed to be transgender. The school in that case also defended the trans student citing Vermont state law.
SNBC NEWS UPDATE: Coach allowed reinstated after legal battle
A high school football coach will be back on the field this fall following a long battle that led all the way to the US Supreme Court. Coach Joe Kennedy was fired in 2015 from Bremerton School District for violating school policy according to officials. Coach Kennedy was an assistant football coach and would silently pray following the public school’s football games. The coach was eventually joined by students and other coaches. Kennedy was accused of recruiting students to be a part of the prayers, a claim he denied. The case led to a lawsuit by the coach which was eventually decided by the US Supreme Court. The court ruled in Coach Kennedy’s favor with one justice commenting that he was a private citizen at the time of the prayers and he did not violate any laws. The school district released a statement confirming the coach was reinstated and would report to the school district for work starting in August of this year.
