US House passes The US House of Representatives recently passed the Parents Bill of Rights
This potential law is designed to give parents more of a say in their child’s education. Supporters call the bill especially important because of the current climate in the US. The bill passed on straight party lines with no Democrats voting for the bill. It now goes to the Democrat controlled Senate and is expected to face a battle there. The Parents Bill of Rights gives parents the right to know what their child or children are being taught, and to have their concerns heard by school administrators. The right to see the school’s budget and spending, protection of children’s privacy and the right to keep children safe are also a part of the bill’s protections for parents. The bill will require schools to post school curriculums and free speech at school board meetings. Some members of the Democratic party who voted against the bill called it an attempt by Republicans to “censor history”.
Library director fired over Kirk Cameron book tour
A library director in Tennessee has lost his job following an incident involving Kirk Cameron. Cameron recently wrote a pro-America book and is doing a nationwide book tour. The tour first made headlines after several libraries refused to host events. Most of the facilities had previously sponsored Drag Queen story hours. Several of the libraries claimed the event by Cameron would be offensive to LGBT groups. According to witnesses that accompanied Cameron to the event, the library’s director and his staff were described as difficult prior to the event and were intentionally disruptive. One guest added that the director of the library, Allan Morales, had attempted to sabotage people attending the event in the community encouraging guests not to come. Allan also reportedly emailed the publishing company claiming he did not want to “promote an agenda on the left or the right.” The county board where the library is located later voted to fire Allan following the incident. Allan has declined comment saying he wants to move on and hopes the community heals from the controversy. Cameron’s book and book tour received nationwide attention for the number of libraries that refused to host him. Most of those libraries later extended invitations following outcry from their local communities and supporters.
