Teacher wins landmark amount in wrongful termination case
A teacher in Virginia has won a landmark case against his former school district. French teacher Peter Vlaming was fired in 2018, by the West Point School Board because of his Christian faith. The termination came after the teacher refused to use the preferred pronouns of a student who claimed to be trans-identified. Attorneys for the teacher say that he felt referring to the student by the opposite gender they were was a violation of his Christian faith. After a failed compromise was discussed, the board fired Vlaming. The teacher then reached out to Alliance Defending Freedom to take on his case. Attorneys for Mr. Vlaming say the teacher being terminated was a violation of his religious rights. Mr. Vlaming and the school district settled the wrongful termination case with a landmark judgement. He was awarded 575 thousand dollars. Mr. Vlaming’s attorneys say they are pleased with the decision. The teacher, in a statement with ADF echoed his attorney’s comments and says that he hopes this ruling will be used to protect other teachers and professors’ First Amendment rights. The West Point Public School Board Superintendent also commented that he is happy with the settlement and the case being resolved.
U.S. highest court declines to hear abortion case against state of Texas
The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the Biden Administration concerning a case against the state of Texas. The administration sued the state over its pro-life abortion laws. The laws in the state of Texas limit the time frame and abortion services that are allowed after the heartbeat of an unborn child is detected. The Biden Administration claimed the state laws prohibited doctors from offering emergency treatment in the case of danger to the mother. Attorneys for the state of Texas countered saying the federal government wanted abortion services to be provided at hospitals, not life saving emergency care. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed, declining to hear the appeal of a lower court’s ruling. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the ruling a major victory. SBA Pro-Life America State Policy Director, Katie Glenn-Daniel, says the decision is a victory for all pro-life states, and confirms pro-life states do require care and consideration for both patients, mother and child.
