Irish teacher arrested for rejecting student’s gender request
A teacher in Ireland is currently in jail after refusing to address a student by a different pronoun. Enoch Burke is currently in jail awaiting release in a case that started when Burke refused a request by school administrators. The teacher was asked to refer to a student as they/them. Burke refused citing his Christian faith and reiterating that there are only two genders male and female. The situation quickly escalated with the teacher being suspended from his job with pay pending a further decision. Burke was later arrested for repeatedly trying to report to the school to teach. He claimed since he was still being paid by the country’s department of education he should continue reporting to work. This action resulted in the school administrators’ banning Burke claiming harassment and stalking. A justice in the case now says the teacher will not be released from jail until he promises not to return to the school. The judge has even gone as far as to threaten to keep Mr. Burke in prison until after Christmas. Burke is appealing his case to Ireland’s Supreme Court and that country’s department of education delay or dismiss the case.
