Proverbs 3:3 NKJV

Let not mercy and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Solomon gave advice to attach mercy around our necks and inscribe it on our hearts. That is keeping it close and holding it dear. How can we do that? It can be done by reminding ourselves regularly about God's mercy. As we have seen in the Old Testament, it was something God's people constantly reminded themselves of. In the Proverbs 3:4, Solomon said keeping mercy and truth close to us will result in favor and high esteem in God' s sight as well as in man's. We should be able to see why God and man will show us favor and hold us in high esteem when we live by the law of mercy. Mercy makes us better people. Mercilessness is associated with the wicked. The opposite would be true of the righteous. This is illustrated in scripture. Look at these verses for example.

Proverbs 14:21 - He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.

Proverbs 14:22 - Do they not go astray who devise evil? But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good.

Proverbs 14:31 - He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.
