Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Our desire in prayer should be to see God’s will done. Jesus illustrated this in the sample prayer. “Your kingdom come” expresses desire to see God’s perfect plan fulfilled on earth. “Your will be done” is an expression that takes us away from self-gratification to pleasing God. “On earth as it is in heaven” shows us what God’s will for earth is. When we think about what heaven is like it will help us pray for God’s will to be done on earth. We can know God does not want sickness, disease, poverty or any other ill that exists on earth because there are none of those things in heaven. Let us make sure our prayers have the spirit described in Jesus’ sample prayer – a spirit of unselfishness, a desire to please God and to see heaven’s realities manifested on earth.
