Parent company creates autonomous branch for companies including Ben & Jerry’s after anti-Israel sentiment from brand
The parent company Unilever is announcing a major change that involves Ben & Jerry’s. The corporate conglomerate has announced it will spin off the company along with other dessert focused brands from its main roster of businesses. The move means that several companies will be treated in a more independent status, while still under the umbrella of the main company. The announcement is not a surprise to critics who have called for boycotts of Unilever, mainly because of Ben and Jerry’s. The company has taken a more liberal and vocal stance on political issues, especially the nation of Israel. The founders of Ben & Jerry’s have used the company’s platform to vocalize opposition against the Jewish nation including participation in the BDS movement, support of Palestinians and referring to Israel as, “Occupied Palestinian Territory”. In addition to these actions, the company also released a statement on July 4th calling for the US to return stolen indigenous land and make an ongoing commitment to do so in the future. These controversial comments have led to boycotts by civilians, US, and Israeli officials. Unilever has continued to distance itself from the controversy and from its “problem child company” as it has been dubbed by some critics. Unilever has not commented any further on its latest business move and if it’s connected to Ben and Jerry’s liberal stance.

Despite pressure from other governments, including the Biden Administration, Netanyahu has been unwavering in his mission to dismantle Hamas. The U.S. has attempted to negotiate a ceasefire deal. The deal heavily favors Hamas according to critics. The deal would stop the fighting for six weeks, release only 40 hostages in exchange for 900 currently held in Israeli prisons. The Biden administration also implied they want Prime Minister Netanyahu replaced.
